Update error when installing Route 66 Mobile 8

Postby grandadfatboy » Wed Nov 11, 2009 5:11 pm

Hi everyone,

I have copied Route 66 Mobile 8 to micro sd for my i8510 with no problems. With the sd card inserted into the phone I select " install Mobile 8" and eventually receive "update error". I have reformatted the sd card twice and copied the software to the card exactely as Route 66 describe, but always end up with the same "update error". Has anyone else experienced this problem or know of a solution.

Thanks guys.

Hello,
1. If you have the latest firmware in you phone, then you already have the latest version of Route 66 (update is not necessary)

2. If your phone still have the old firmware and has Route 66 preinstalled,
then you cannot update to version 8_0_18990 (which is meant for phones without Route 66 preinstalled).

3. If your phone still have the old firmware and has Route 66 preinstalled, you can only update to samsung's Route 66 special update version 8.0.18783. Download this update at http://www.66.com/samsung/index.php?cid ... t=1&scat=2 and follow the instructions (as contained in the link above):

Full instructions below:

ROUTE 66 Mobile 8 for Symbian S60 3rd Edition compatible devices
Software downloads
This update will only work if you have bought a "ROUTE 66 Mobile 8" product.

This update only works with Symbian S60 3rd Edition compatible devices and SHOULD NOT be used with the Nokia 6110 Navigator phone!

Pre-requisites
- All keys will be deleted from the device while updating the application. You will need to make a key synchronisation after update.

- We recommend you to delete all history items and saved locations in Extras->Weather before running the updater.

Installation steps
1) Determine the version of ROUTE 66 Mobile 8 that you currently have. Start Mobile 8 and select "Options > View > About Mobile". The version number is displayed in the header of the "About" text. If the version number is 8.0.18783, you are already up to date! If the version number is 8.0 or 8.0.x, where x is a number smaller than 18783, you should download the update at the bottom of this page.

2) Remove the memory card from your phone and insert it into the memory card reader/writer.

3) Insert the memory card reader/writer into the USB port of your computer. You can also use the data cable connection (select the option Mass Storage / Data transfer depending on the phone model).

4) Run the update file.

5) Follow the instructions on the screen.

6) The installation takes about one minute.

7) The message "InstallShield Wizard Completed" is displayed to indicate that the update was installed successfully.

8) Remove the data cable or remove the memory card from the memory card reader/writer and insert it into your mobile phone.

9) Now execute the file SIGNED_Mobile8_S60_3_0_v8_0_18783_PU.SIS (which can be found on the installation drive in case the Mobile 8 application was pre-installed on your device) or execute the file SIGNED_Mobile8_S60_3_0_v8_0_18783_SA.SIS otherwise.

10) Start ROUTE 66 Mobile 8 on your device.

11) Activate the product as mentioned in the user manual

That's a very comprehensible guide, Aliu. Glad to see you're still active down here. Back on topic; is there any way I can load maps for a certain country to the phone? AFAIK there are no preloaded maps for Route 66, am I right?

Hi everyone,

Thank you Aliu for your very quick and comprehensive reply. May I start this reply with an apology for not giving full information in my original post.

When I received my Samsung i8510 it already had a Route 66 application pre-installed and the user had to pay to download each country map as required. This I discovered was an extremely expensive way of purchasing the product, so I purchased Route 66 Mobile 8 Symbian S60 V3 for Western Europe on DVD. I then followed the instructions to install the product to micro sd card and inserted the card into my phone. It is after I agree to proceed with the install that I receive the message "update error". Is it possible that the version of Route 66 pre-installed to the phone is causing a conflict with the version I am trying to install via memory card? If this is the case how do I remove the version embedded in the phones memory?

Any further help or suggestions will be gratefully received, hopefully in time to test the product in the English Lake District & Scotish Highlands over the next two weeks.

Thanks again.

Hello Grandad Fatboy,

Follow these steps to activate your Route 66.

1. First, there is no need to reinstall your Route 66 with the DVD because it's already preinstalled in your phone.
Just slot in the Route 66 DVD into your pc DVD drive.
Don't run the exe. program, just choose to "Open folders to view files"
Then open these folders...
MemoryImage ==> system ==> apps ==> ROUTE66_v8 ==> Data ==> maps
(from maps folder, copy the "Western Europe 2008-Q3" map to your desktop).
Now remove the Route 66 DVD from pc.

2. Take your phone and launch the preinstalled Route 66 in your phone
(World map and English language is already preinstalled).
NOTE: Just open the Route 66 application on your phone, leave it to run for about a minute or two, and then
close it (this is necessary in order to create the folder "System" and all it's sub-folders in case it does not exist already).

3. Connect your phone to pc (choosing Mass storage in the "USB connectivity mode")

4. If your phone drive is displayed automatically in your pc, then choose "Open folders to view files"
(If not, open the phone's mass storage drive yourself).

5. Open the folder...
system ==> apps ==> ROUTE66_v8 ==> Data ==> Maps
Now copy your Western Europe (or whatever map) into the folder "Maps".

6. Restart your phone.

7. Launch Route 66 application.
Will display a prompt asking "....get license key from server?", click YES.
The phone will try to retrieve your license key from Route 66 server (which don't exist yet) and ...
will display something like ..."Failed. Enter voucher code?" Click YES. Now enter your voucher code
(which is located inside the DVD Case. it is a 16-digit code, for example 25AE-3578-ZX12-QA77).
Will display something like "...code accepted"

8. Verify that your new map is the active map now in your Route 66 application (World map is active by default)
Launch Route 66, click "Options ==>Settings ==> Map ==> Map (Western Europe).
If world map is shown in map, change it to Western Europe or whatever map you have installed.

9. That's All

10. Advice: Install Route 66 sync application v9.7 on your pc. Connect your phone on Mass storage to pc.
And register your map. Next time when you need to reinstall your maps (maybe after formatting disk),
your phone will be able to retrieve your license keys from server. So you won't have to enter voucher code manually.

NOTE: The process above is for installing the maps into phone E: mass storage.
But it is exactly the same for installing into F: Memory card.
Just ensure that the folder "System" and all it's sub-folder exist in your memory card,
otherwise create it and copy your map to the map folder.

Enjoy and best of luck.

Hello GTR83,

Only world map is preloaded in the Route 66 application.
The world map has no street address but can show names of towns and few other places of interest.
You need to load the maps yourself.
Please see my response to grandadfatboy for how to install maps.
You can download any of Route 66 maps from their website if you already have the license to activate them.
If you load any maps and do not activate, the application will freeze after launching the app for a few time.

Hi Aliu,

Thank you for such a detailed reply. Thankfully I was able to download your responce at a time when our hotel Wi-Fi was actually working. With your excellent instructions I was able to install and successfully use my Route 66 application. I did however have great problems installing voices into the application, but fortunately this problem was overcome easily by visiting the Route 66 online shop and downloading them for free, (after in-putting my activation code) along with colour schemes, again some of these were also free. I also took your advise and when I had finished installing everything I required I synchronised my license keys. Finally I installed Route 66 application v9.7 on my pc and backed up my software too, just as you suggested. Thank you very much for your help.

Route 66 worked faultlessly on our way home from Cumbria, with one exeption. Our route included a 3-4 minute local ferry crossing and the ferry had been suspended due to bad weather. Apart from that Route 66 used the same route that I would have used if I were using a traditional map. I will be using my sat nav at every oportunity on journeys I make regularly as well as those I don't to establish how many anomolies it throws up.

Once again thank you for help it was greatly appreciated.

Best regards
Graqndad Fatboy.

P.S. Are there any free celebrity voices that can be downloaded and used?

Hello Grandadfatboy,
I am glad my suggestions were of help to you.
About celebrity voices, unfortunately there is none for now either paid or free.
As you have the Western Europe Map, all the voices therein are free, as well as the Travel Guides and Colour Schemes.
You can download any of them either via Route 66 Sync (PC) on via Wifi on your mobile phone (Launch Route 66, select Options ==> Extras ==> Voices or Colour Schemes or Travel Guides (make your choice) ==> Download.
Takes les than a minute to download.
Advice: When you travel within city centre or short distances (choose the option in "As short as possible" inTRAVEL MODE)
And if decide to make a long trip, choose "As fast as possible" inTRAVEL MODE option.
The reason is that "As fast as possible" travel mode option (which is the default setting) will always look for expressways/ highways even when it will shorter driving through the narrow road to the next streest.

Enjoy your Route 66. It's an excellent navigation app. Safe driving.

A bit off topic here Aliu, but can you point me the pros and cons of Route 66, specifically when compared to Nokia Maps 3.0? I currently use Nokia Maps 3.0 and I think it's good enough for a (cr*ckable) navigation app, just wondering if a paid option like Route 66 would be even better. Thanks in advance!

Hello GTR8,
I have not used Nokia maps so I really don't know how it works.

Thus I am qualified to compare both.

But if you ask my opinion on Route 66, its superb. Only that it is not free. It's paid and expensive for that matter.
