If you can put it simple terms I would appreciate it greatly. as I am very simple too. Many thanks for any help you can give me. cheers

There is a clear explanation on this at feb-2009-i8510xxib2-free-download-drivers-instructions-t807.html

To simplify this, please follow the instructions below:

How to Flash Your Samsung I8510

1. In your PC, Install all the tools needed for flashing. These are:

a. SAMSUNG CDMA Modem driver
b. Samsung USB_Driver MCCI_4.34 WHQL
c. SSDN_V1.1.808.7165_SETUP_whql
d. msxml
e. Samsung_PC_Studio_7.2.24.9

2. Now download the firmware of your choice from
"The Best Firmware for I8510" (to your desktop)

3. Also download Apollo v6.05 or v6.10 (I prefer v6.10)

4. Create a "New Folder" on your desktop and put the downloaded
firmware and Apollo in this new folder.

5. Launch Apollo from your "New Folder"

6. On top left of Apollo, click on

a. "Modem Code" ==> and select the file with name
"Phone_I8510..." from your new folder.

b. "PDA or CODE Image" ==> and open the folder with name
"PDA_Code I8510..." Please select the
last file in this folder, called "CODE..."

c. "CSC Image" ==> and open the folder with name
"PDA_CSC I8510..." Please select the
last file in this folder, called "CSC...".

7. Now put off your phone. Get USB plug ready at hand.

8. With your phone off, press and hold "4" and "*" with 2 fingers.
With another finger, press and hold the power button until your
phone displays a red screen with "All download" flashing onscreen.
Release all your fingers as soon as "All download" is displayed.

9. Plug in your USB into the phone(first) and the other end to
your PC.

10. On the top right of Apollo, the item "Nº 1 Modem" will display
a "COM X" (where X is any number) in the blank space.

[NOTE: If nothing shows up in the Modem column, please wait for some
one or two minutes, Windows may need this time to detect and install
new drivers (in some systems like Windows 7 and Vista). If at last
the blank space displays "COM x", then continue with nº 11.

And if after, say 3 minutes, nothing is shown on the modem column,
please unplug your USB plug from PC and phone. Remove the battery of your
phone (it's the only way to put it off). You need to reinstall and
verify that all needed drivers mentioned in nº. 1 are correctly installed.

11. Click on "All Download"
(You will observe the progress of installation on Apollo.
When it completes to 100%, there will be a little pause...

And then the item "PDA" (the next row below Modem) will display
someting like a "#...".

Just like we observed for Modem, we may need to wait for a minute
for Windows to detect and install new drivers. And if nothing shows
up after a minute, please unplug the USB and do as suggested in the
Note in nº 10 above. You will have to start overall again.

12. If PDA installs successfully, your phone will automatically reboot.

13. When Apollo displays that you should reboot your phone, this is the time
to unplug the USB from both PC and phone.

14. No need to reboot phone (it rebooted automatically).
Caution: On setup of your phone, you will asked to...
a. choose your country (yes, do so);
b. Set date (no, leave the date as it is...15/08/2008)
this will allow applications like CNN to be installed.
c. Set time (yes, do so)

15. Check Menu ==> Applications ==> and when all applications are displayed
(especially CNN), then you can safely set the current date
in your phone. If you mistakenly set the phone's date before
CNN could be displayed in Menu => Applications. The solution is to
set back the date to August 2008 and leave the phone on for some time.
CNN will definitely reappear again. Then set your phone to curent date.

16. That's All.

hi there Aliu, i'm a new user. i live in indonesia, but i've bought my phone in singapore. i dont really understand about samsung firmware. the information on my phone show "software version : I8510DJHK4" "custom version : I8510XS0HK1". i want to optimize my phone, especially battery life, and signal reception (3G). any language pack with english would be fine. based on your experience, which firmware is best for me? is it okay if i install a nigeria or south africa firmware? can i restore my firmware if anything bad happen? i have all the tools from http://samsungi8510.com/i8510-innov8-firmware/, anything else should i have before updating my firmware? thanks

Hi there 9litser, I'm also an Indonesian INNOV8 user and well my firmware is even older than yours. Aren't you worried about warranty?

UPDATE : have just put I8510DJIC1 into the phone. Gonna post my findings soon. The most recognizable is even with Norton, Route 66, CNN, RoadSync and the rest of the default apps, I still have 46.2 MB of phone memory. Cool !

not really. my innov8 is from singapore, samsung Indonesia wouldn't accept my phone warranty. i already ask the nearest samsung service centre for an official firmware, but they didn't have it. and i hate my battery life so much. if firmware update could fix this, why not?

The official firmware for our "Beloved Nation" is already on your phone - I8510DJHK4. It's the same one they offered to put into mine. Well I've just put in I8510DJIC1 and will keep updating for the next few days :)

Hello 9litser. Don't worry, be happy. The good news is that you can flash up and down and up again... and nothing will harm your phone as long as you do it correctly. It will only consume your time. It's like installing a new operating system to your pc, as long as you have all your applications and drivers, your pc will always come to life newer and better. So don't panic. go ahead and flash your phone with any of the recommended best firmwares. You will surely be glad you did. All of us did.

Apart from the UK firmware, you can install any other one. All of them are good and has English languange as the default language. Or you may prefer to install that of India.

To understand more about how Samsung firmwares are numbered, please read how-samsung-firmware-versioning-works-t235.html.

Note: The link you provided for obtaining your drivers contained mostly old drivers. I will advise you get the latest drivers from other source (in this forum). Examples, get Apollo 6.05 or Apollo 6.10 instead of the one in that link. secondly, download the latest Samsung PC Studio from Samsung official website, E.g for India from http://in.samsungmobile.com/supports/so ... mUpdate.do

Best of luck.

To 9litser and Aliu, I8510DJIC1 has been working fine on my Indonesian phone. In fact I failed to install an app again last night, but after immediately removing the battery and rebooted, the phone worked just fine. On my previous firmware this would slow down the phone forever, which means I have to format the phone every time.

UPDATE : Battery life has greatly improved, 24 hours after I charged I still have 6 battery bars left with moderate usage. No camera shots fired at all during those 24 hours though. Used the music player via headset for roughly 2 hours.
