Screen/slider issue

Postby Garry » Sat Nov 28, 2009 10:25 pm

My Innov8 has constantly been a source of amusement with its various issues (dust under screen, broken charge/data port, software bugs, corrupted memory card etc). However, this one is a new one for me.

If I open the slider quickly (like snapping it upwards to open), everything is fine. If I open it slowly, the screen cuts out won't display anything but it still gets power as its backlit - the only way to reset it is to close it and power the phone down (holding the power button or taking the battery out). Opening it quickly, the screen dims slightly (occasionally going off), but brightens up again and works as normal.

Sounds to me like a connection issue, but I hope the phone lasts me another month or so when I can upgrade on my contract.

Slight update, I've found a way around having to power down the phone.

If I open the slider a bit too slow and the screen goes dead, I close the phone and wait for the backlight to go off (around 5-7secs), then reopen the slider and the screen works fine again.

Very strange. Any ideas if its a hardware or software problem? My firmware has never been updated from launch (September 08).

nobody mentioned this problem yet, i think it probably would be the HW problem, some connectors on Flex kabel maybe (LCD to motherboard) ...

I realized, that innov8 has no future anymore > Nokia N900 (With portable version of Debian Linux), but I still visit sometimes this site :)

Well, seeing as I'm due an upgrade next week, and the phone now refusing to display anything onscreen (though it powers up, its now not backlit), I thought I didn't have anything to lose by cracking open the phone and seeing whats inside.

I used the guide at formymobile.co.uk, and carefully set about taking it apart. It was pretty straightforward, but the guide doesn't mention that you have to use a fair about of pressure to open the case and remove the motherboard, so be careful not to overdo it!

Anyway, during my investigation, the connector in this image was barely attached.

Thinking that would be the cause of the problem, I clipped it back on and reassembled the phone. Unfortunately, it wasn't a solution, and now the phone doesn't even power on anymore.

This is the end of my Samsung ownership, I'll ebay it for spares. During the time I've had mine, its had its faults, and a couple of friends have had problems with their Samsungs (A Pixon, a G600 and U600), and its turned me off the brand. They have some fantastic features (and the Innov8's 8mp cam is THE best I've used, better than SE Cybershots), but the phones just aren't tough enough for daily use. I don't know what I'll pick next but it won't be a Samsung. I guess I was unlucky to be the first to have a fault like this, but the phone is about 14 months old, just not what I expected.

Here's the disassembly guide for anyone needing it:

I've got a similar issue. I've had it two weeks ago and today again: the phone wouldn't respond to the keys on the keyboard, until I took out the battery so it would shut down and then I could simply start it up again. Seems like it's more like a software problem, because the phone simply works when switching it on again. I think on both coincidences this behaviour started after a missed call...

Odd . . . My Innov8 takes the beating and keeps on ticking. Plus it takes software abuse as well . . . I guess the more you use it, the better it takes the abuse . . . Like a cheap whore . . . God I love my slut of an Innov8.

Hello everyone. I realize this is a bit late, but nevertheless...
I had exactly the same problem like described above. But at first the keypad worked, if I opened it, clicked a key and then closed it, like it would need a confirmation... But then it almost died on me...

Neither that wouldn't work :D

Then I took it apart to see what was wrong (I too studied disassembly steps one-by-one on ForMyMobile, before even tried to do anything! For untrained hand it can get quite tricky - at least at first). I discovered, that OEM Flex cable was nearly torn apart
I quickly ran to the nearest cellphone repairman and bought a new one for like 15 dollars, replaced it and guess what :D it works like new. Even I hardly belived it. Now I have to buy additional 2 or 3, before they stop fabricating this things and then I'm good for the next 6 years or so

Good luck
