Route 66? or another gps?

Postby spunky » Wed Sep 03, 2008 4:41 pm

Hi everyone, got my sammie today!! Carephone warehouse (england) £29 upgrade fee on a Racoon 30 package. Anyhow! Was wanting to go ahead and download the gps maps, but wanted to know whether anyone else had used route 66 on other phones and whats it like/worth downloading and paying the 49 Euros?

Use to have a N95, and after a play today find this a great upgrade, especially camera. But the N95 you could download the maps and track your position for free! I know, im a cheapskate!! But if anyone has any other experiences with other Navigation software and would it be compatible, I would be grateful.

PS Great write up/review, spot on with it all. Keep up the good work.

I used route 55 on my G810 it was pretty decent, I hear Gamin XT works on the i8510 and its pretty good. Not sure if it works with internal gps or not tho?

I might sound like I go on about Nokia a lot but they do seem to care more about the end user.

They always bundle in a period of free navigation with new devices, normally 3 months. Samsung has just got R66 slung on there and then expect us to fork out £40 for the luxury of the UK maps.

I am using Navicore which I have had for a couple of years now, it installed fine (on my N95 I couldn't run R66 and Navicore) and it is working well. Lock time is approx 1 minute and it seems to stay locked. The reciever being at the top of the device means theres no need to have the slider opened which is good.

4.20 is the latest, do you mean installs but internal the GPS doesn't work? Or it doesn't even install. Remember it needs to be legit & registered before it will find the internal GPS. Trial version won't find any internal GPS device intill its registered. Was the same on my Nokia n95 8gb.

I emailed TomTom about whether Navigator 6 works on the i8510 and they sent me what looks like a stock reply:

-----------------------------------------------
Please go to the below links to view the devices that are currently supported for use with Navigator 6.

http://www.tomtom.com/products/features.php?ID=286&Category=2&Lid=4
http://www.tomtom.com/products/features.php?ID=260&Category=2&Lid=1

Your PDA is not supported for use with Navigator 6.

At TomTom we aim to test as many PDA's and Mobile Phones with our Navigator Products. However not all PDA's and Phones are compatible with our products due to the hardware restraints of the device, or the ROM version installed on the device.

As more and more PDA's, Phones and other handheld devices become available on the market, it is not always possible to test all devices straight away. When we find that a device performs well with our products, we will list the device as compatible on our website.

Our Compatibility lists are updated as regularly as possible, but you find that your device is not listed in the compatibility lists above, then your device has been deemed incompatible.

It is TomTom's policy not to support incompatible devices with our products. We only suggest installing our products onto compatible PDA's, Phones and other Handheld devices.
--------------------------------

That's a shame as most people on various web sites seem to think TomTom is better than Route66. The i8510 has only just come out though, so it could just be that they haven't tested it yet.

I'm thinking about getting the i8510 this weekend. I've been a Nokia follower for as far as I can remember, currently with an N95.

Does anyone know of google earth mobile works with this phone?

Are there any GPS applications pre-installed?
