Samsung have been a S60 license holder for about 4 years now, and have produced quite a few S60 handsets before the i8510, such as the i450, i550, i850 etc.
Symbian Ltd has for years been owned by a selection of companies, one of whom was Samsung (Samsung have just sold their share to Nokia), along with SonyEricsson, Motorola, Nokia, NTT DoCoMo and others.
S60 is a user interface which runs on Symbian OS and has always been owned by Nokia.
UIQ is another user interface which runs on Symbian OS and is owned by UIQ.
UIQ and S60 (along with Symbian OS) are licensed by companies such as Nokia, SonyEricsson, Samsung, Panasonic, Motorola, Mitsubishi and others who then build phones utilising that OS / UI combination. As Nokia owns S60, all S60 devices feature code licensed from Nokia.
What has now happened with the Symbian Foundation is that Nokia are buying out all the other Symbian Ltd. owners and taking control of Symbian Ltd; opensourcing their existing S60 user interface, and then GIVING them BOTH to the newly formed Symbian Foundation, to enable current and existing licensees to use the OS / UI for FREE in their upcoming phones.
