One Year On

Postby DarkPand0r » Tue Sep 08, 2009 11:22 pm

Okay, having had my Samsung i8510 for a year now I thought its about time I try to collaborate my feelings about this phone.

Firstly, I have to say this is the single most incredibly pleasing phone I have ever owned. Having been a Nokia fan boy for several years I tried this on a gut feeling that the Nokia N96 was going to be a failiure (I was correct, met a Nokia rep several days ago. Her reply: "yea, that was a big pile of shit..." when comparing to my i8510).
I first bought this phone when working for LG, i've always loved Symbian and its been a massive comfort zone so going from the earlier N81 to this was a relatively nice upgrade.

General Use:
Okay, first problem I have with this handset is the shortcut keys on the keypad, I hate to say it but they make texting whilst driving (illegal i know....) or texting whilst not looking an absolute nightmare. So many times i've pressed one of those bloody buttons and an applications popped up its made me almost want to smash my head against a wall, but i find them useful and the fact that i press them is more my error not the phones....So i shall be silenced.
One thing i'm impressed with on the phone is the UI, it looks sleek and is easy to navigate (if of course your not a retard who has used nothing but SE phones...), i really like the little touches.
For example, if i reply to a message i can just swish along the touchpad and the screen does a little swish as it opens, i love that

Overall i find the phone simple to use, although i do use HandyShell which makes it just that little easier to navigate..

Build
The build quality is better than almost all Nokias of the same era, none of the plastic crap and the front chassis is made of actual metal, shocking!
The touchpad is something that impressed me on the phone, it makes alot of movements through the phone very simple, i doubt i could navigate the web without it!

Features
8mp camera, 8gb + 16gb card, S60 v3.2....Thats ALL i will ever ask of a phone...........

Software
I just want to put that i think Fring and Shozu are two programs that should come with EVERY Symbian/Android/Iphone handset ever to be created. I think they compliment the handset so well and having Push Email that isn't on a Blackberry or an Iphone is awesome.
One problem i have, Route66. Why was it included if straight off the bat you have to pay 50 quid for it? (im talking UK pound...). On top of that the problems with downloading the maps were just ridiculous, i will admit Samsung did cock that one right up......
Throw N-Gage and a few other applications on the phone and it becomes a DEFINITE Nokia destroyer.

Conclusion
As you can see, I do love this phone. Its packed features and decent speed and abilities make it a must have for any Symbian enthusiast. The one gripe i really have with this phone is because of Nokia.
I feel that alot of Software on the market has been killed by these great brutes of the Symbian world, 3/5 programs i tried by mainstream companies told me that my phone was not Nokia meaning it would not be placed on my phone.....
On top of this i feel that Samsungs support for the phone and trying to create a store for this handset and others has been very slow (they are releasing one this month.....)

I know alot of people have had problems with this phone, and although i can sympathise i think the problem is understanding of the operating system for alot of cases. I've met so many people who had battery problems because they left 10+ programs open at one time...

So there you go, my feelings about the Innov8 one year on.
What do you think?
How about your feelings?

Absolutely agree mate. Coming off from several SE phones this phone is DEFINITELY an upgrade, my last Symbian handheld was the original Nokia 6600 from 2001 or something when the S60 platform was still immature-ish, and I hated Symbian that time. 8 years later I found this "black gem" -- am loving it!

About the keypad problems, I have never mispressed keys while looking the other way, but using the touchpad in combination with the d-pad can suck at times since it's very easy to accidentally swipe across the touchpad when I'm actually trying to press the confirm button.

Anyway what push email solution do you use on this little beast? I found RoadSync to be hardly user-friendly... :(

Don't you have to set up a Mail2Web account first?

Have you tried System Seven? Everybody keeps saying that it really eats your battery - I have no means to test it since these days my battery only lasts 1-2 days anyway!

Never tried it.
To tell the truth, 2 days is good enough for a phone IMO...Don't think i've ever had a phone that lasts more than 2 days, and mine will get around 2.5-3........

I come from a lot of Symbian phones and have an amazing history with them and later models.

Through and through this is the best handset I have ever had. It gives me a feeling of comfort and joy when I use it.

I've had the I8910, that didn't make me too happy. I had the N97, that was another phone that went nowhere. So I've used the successors to the Innov8.

This phone was a gem out of all the useless symbian handsets out there.

I think if one is inclined, knows how to use JbakTaskman, and gets the phone hacked it's one of the best phones on the market.

I have a whole bunch of programs that I've stuck with since I've had this phone, they just keep getting better and better.

For some reason this is my favorite phone and will always remain as such.

I do love the i8510 but its getting a bit dated and i feel the need for something new which is a shame.
I like the i8910 and having used it several times i wouldn't mind having one. But having the TouchwizUI is a dam shame....They should have pushed for Nokia's Homescreen which i think is a massive advantage for the s60v5 generation.

The Nokia N97 was always doomed to fail, the resistive screen and only 128mb RAM for such a software intensive phone is just suicide.
Its a shame though that the N97 mini will suffer the same fate.....Just a little smaller.

May i ask why you didn't enjoy the Omnia HD?

I overall dislike touchscreen phones

Reception is horrible

The camera was slow with auto focus and processing pictures

Taking the device out of sleep took forever

The music player doesn't have a podcast section

The audio is very low on most videos

The Flash Lite integration sucked in comparison to the N97

The onscreen T9 keyboard was the worst I've ever used

The music player is so slow

These were my chief complaints about the phone.
