My next new phone....

Postby DarkPand0r » Thu Sep 10, 2009 1:44 am

Okay, my upgrade is coming up in the next month or so and i'm looking at which phone to buy. Ill put the points for and against each handset and then we can have a nice little chat about the handsets themselves.

Samsung i8910 Omnia HD

Advantages
Capacitive touch - a must in the touch screen field....
s60v5
720p recording
16gb built in with expandable memory
AMOLED
Powerful processor

Disadvantages
NOT Nokia - Nokia has decided they don't like other phones using Symbian software so is making it more difficult for official applications to be used on anything but Nokia...
Bulky - its a dam big phone....
TouchWiz UI - I always hated the widget menu, ever since the Tocco. And whacking it on a smartphone?? Looks cheap....
No Camera lens cover - why not......?

Nokia X6

Advantages
Capacitive touch screen
S60v5
32gb inbuilt memory
Supports pretty much any s60v5 application - Nokia phone, meaning i can use Nokia's apps...
Has Nokia's new homescreen - i REALLY like the new nokia homescreen style.....
Comes with music - Free unlimited music downloads to the mobile phone or PC, for life.....
Better Support

Disadvantages
No expandable memory
5mp camera
no camera lens cover
typical Nokia build quality - *sigh* seriously.....
Same processor as every other Nokia handset.....

Sony Ericsson Satio

Advantages
Whopping 12mp camera!!!
s60v5
Xenon + LED flash
Camera Cover
Powerful Processor
upgradable to 32gb

Disadvantages
NOT Nokia - Doesn't support alot of apps due to this....
s60v5 - I believe this is SE's first Symbian s60v5 device....i know they used to use symbian on the older p900 and such, but, can i trust them?
Sony ericsonn S/W problems - Symbian SW faults + SE SW faults = bad times......
Resistive touch screen.....

N97 Mini

Advantages
s60v5
QWERTY keypad
8gb inbuilt memory
expandable memory
Supports all nokia apps.
Features the newly added Facebook homescreen addition (upgraded also in the X6 and standard n97)
Smaller than the N97 - Not a bad size

Disadvantages
Resistive touch screen - again?
8gb inbuilt memory....stripped from the 32gb in the standard....
Essentially a more basic model of the n97
Still uses the same slow processor etc as the n97 which is a considerably slow and poor phone....

So there we go....They are all s60 handsets and thats a must for me, i would like to try the s60v5 OS but if you have any others to add, please do :)

The phones:
Samsung i8910
Nokia X6
Sony Ericsson Satio
Nokia 97 Mini

What do you guys think?

Nokia N900, end thread.

The phones you mentioned, I have used the I8910, I couldn't stand it.

I had the N97, I dropped that in the mail yesterday.

Both phones sucked.

I'm happy with the Innov8 till the N900 comes out.

The N900 is going to use the dreaded resistive touch and runs on Maemo.
I don't think the N900 is going to be the handset their expecting it to be. I get the subtle hint of the N96 coming back again......

The N900 is going to be the upper level handset for Nokia fanboys.

They will still use Symbian S60 for their midrange phones.

Possibly, but it will depend how the N900 is welcomed.

I assume it will be welcomed well. I will be early adopting it. If it works well my Innov8 will be kept as a back up, if it doesn't well, the Innov8 will resume being my favorite phone to date. It's win-win either way.

The problem for me is the Resistive touch screen.
Its funny how most manufacturers are dropping them due to the sheer weakness it has when compared to a capacitive touch.
The N900 is being marketed as the ultimate handset, But in a climate where most mobile phone operators are trying to get away from mass liquidisation on handsets its probably a step in the wrong direction.
All i want to see is a Nokia phone that meets up to the real competition and that means.

AMOLED screen
Capacitive touch screen (or no touch screen)
Stable SymbianOS
Good inbuilt memory with expandable memory slot
A-GPS + Wifi

The problem with Nokia is always going to haunt them. Maemo is a Linux based OS originally placed in media players and they've just modified it into a phone. Chances are it will suffer the same problems as all Nokia handsets and essentially throw out Beta's of the software.
The way i look at it, the Maemo OS won't take off.
Why they haven't just gone with Android on that handset I don't know but Nokia continue to throw out handsets that are plagued with software issues which is now the main factor in an "N" series phone is known for.

What bugs me more is that the 5800 is a very well appreciated phone, it has been fully welcomed into the low end market and is simple to use.
They had around 3-5 months before the Nokia N97 release and still manage to have ALOT of problems with it. A software company that can't learn from its faults is obviously going wrong somewhere.

Like I said on that other thread, I think the Innov8's main and only fault is, it is a Samsung. And a Samsung with S60 means it won't get much support from Samsung themselves who are busy putting all OSes known to man into their hardware lineup and no support at all (obviously) from the daddy of S60, Nokia. The only way competition will thrive in the Symbian world is when bigger players all do the Symbian Foundation OS, each of them giving an individual taste to the OS. Then I presume I won't have to keep looking for cracked apps again - if Nokia's version of an app sucks there's a high chance that the other big players would have already made a better functioning (and not needing Symbian Signed) app. Just my $0.02 ;)
