Don't forget to pay attention to whats going on too - The optical wheel lets you use the options on the right of the screen, while you can see the shortcuts with the star key or the drop down on settings.

Oh and for the levels, what they mean:
Center Weighted : Whatever is in the crosshair, will be balenced as neutral.
Matrix: You know the levels diagram in photoshop? think that, it makes sure it clips the least. A good beginner mode.
The other one (forgot its name) focuses on 9 points, outside the centre to try and get the best one. Usually does it wrong imho.
Get close when taking photos - if you need light, your range is under a meter - don't go past that for a person photo. It takes fantastic top half shots for this reason by the way. Also again with the flash (err, led) is because its fairly bright, objects too close come out as white and blurred - plan for that by turning it off manually, or getting some distance.
