How Samsung firmware versioning works

Postby stuclark » Tue Nov 11, 2008 1:24 pm

There's lots of people talking about different firmwares on their i8510. However, what *IS* the latest firmware available for the i8510?

When I asked this question of Samsung at London's Symbian Smartphone Show last month, I was told that HH9 is the latest version available. However, this *may* not be the case... Samsung's firmware numbering system goes something like this: (this is taken from another forum and relates directly to a different Samsung phone, so codings may not be 100% correct)
The firmware code is split into individual sections:

i8510 - > model designation (SGH-i8510).
XX - > region / network carrier designation (XX = open Market).
H - > release year (H = 2008).
H - > release month (H = August).
7 - > version number.

Yes - it hasn't been posted on here before (as these forums were somewhat "awkward" to use for a while... Samsung have promised us a user-downloadable firmware update before the end of the year. Unfortunately I couldn't push them any further on an exact date, and it *won't* be available OTA, just as a download.

Now you've said that I'm pretty sure I saw it posted up on the mobile-review forum.

Link below to the actual item in question.

Very impressed with the amount if info you've extracted from Samsung on this, the widgets and the memory patch issue.

Keep it up and keep it coming, this forum could do with more people like you!

Yeah, most of the forum posts on the net about it have come from the All About Symbian forums, where we originally posted the info.

However, it's good to see Samsung re-confirming it publicly in the Innovator (developer) forums.

Fear not, there's quite a few of us mobile techy media types keeping a very close eye on Samsung about these things.

Got also a DJ as network carrier, but bought mine in Thailand :P and thus have a thai plug of a charger, guess the charger doesn't matter then ;)

I'd like to know too what the DJ means, and, can I just change it to XX so I can do the update?

does anyone know if samsung do count the version numbers hexadecimal ? is version A newer than version 9 ? in hexadecimal you count from 0-9 and then A-F ... if that is true, than my firmware is pretty new (at least newer than the H7).
