GPS+ Question - Please Help. Thanks

Postby Careless » Sun May 10, 2009 3:35 am

I have a problem with running GPS+

I want to be able to use it every 7 days but that requires data connection right? Now the question is that, can I run it once every 7 days providing that I connect to my wireless internet network of my home with my I8510? I dont have a data connection with my GSM company and I dont want to activate my data connection for my cell phone unless I have to. I just want to run it every 7 days with wireless LAN of my home.Is this possible?
If so, I already tried defining an access point under connectivity and settings but when I try to run GPS+, it still says "no access point defined, please define an access point in connection settings". well I think I did! It is an access point for internet right? Can someone please explain it? I would really appreciate if someone gives step by step insructions to define a correct access point. However, I am under the impression that I already did but dont know what I am doing wrong...

What is the benefit of having data connection enabled with GSM operator as you are using your Garmin XT Mobile? I mean I know I wont have access to Garmin Online but so what? Will I miss anything so important? Please enlighten me!

Thanks for your time.

You can't use WLAN for GPS+.
I think that's because the phone needs to know where you are so that it can download the right data for your region.

Thank you for your answer Gerii.

I will talk to my GSM company and turn data access on.

How much data will I be downloading each time? Is it something like 1mb when I run it once a week? Any idea?

I think it just needs some KB because it's very fast after connecting to the server.

For me it's only about 50kb every seven days.

Thanks for your reply Ricardo99.
Ok just phoned my GSM company it is 5 cents per kb. Holy moly, that is expensive. Let us say if GPS+ downloads 300kb per month it is around $15.00. I think it is worth it but for someone who is not using GPS all the time, there is no need to update every 7 days I guess. If you are traveling once a month, it is ok to download once a month so this way you dont need to download date every week...

Ok, as I mentioned above data connection is on but I can not run GPS+, when I choose download data first says downloading then "download unavailable"
When I choose select valid time again trying to download but says" getting valid date time failed".

Already defined a packet data access point. It asked me for a name and I put a random name for that packet data access point. Please note that I did not do any setup after the GSM company unblocked my data access but I do know that data connection is active as I can surf the internet.

Any idea why I can not download data into GPS+ ?

Thanks a bunch everyone!

I experienced that last night, and yes, I can also browse just fine. Try going outdoors or near the windows (which is what I did last night) and fire up GPS+ again.

You don't necessarily need to download data in order to use your GPS.
Using GPS+ (downloading data via your operator's network) is expensive and a waste of money if you can wait only a few minutes extra (say 3 minutes).
What the GPS+ does is to download the data in advance for quick access whenever you need it for the next 7 days. With data GPS data already available, your phone will pick up signal within a minute or two. But if you don't use the GPS+ service, your built-in GPS will also pick up GPS signal within 5 minutes (at first time and within a miute or two in subsequent times). Some GPS+ has no special advantage.
I have been using my GPS without downloading any GPS+ data. I always pick up GPS signal within a minute. Never more than 2 minutes.
Please try it. If you fail to pick GPS signal within 2 minutes, then try to update your phone to any of the available IC1 firmware (See Firmware section of this forum).
