GPS help - One more question!

Postby jenniferp » Mon Feb 09, 2009 6:32 pm

Hi all

I have read through the various topics on getting GPS to work however I am no closer to being able to use it on my new i8510!
I have activated the integrated GPS option in the positioning methods menu and have my access point as WAP (post pay on the o2 network)...I have also tried walking outside with it, holding it up in the air! I have also attempted to d/l the GPSplus but it just shows a continuous downloading bar.

But I still get nothing from GPS - I get the "searching for GPS data" etc when I load the GPS data icon in applications but there is always "no connection" displayed.

It's so annoying that I can't use the full capabilities of my new phone, it is so amazing otherwise. I haven't used GPS before and not sure if I need to d/l anything - I thought it would work on the phone straight out the box. As for route 66 that just shows a continuous searching for satellite sign...

Please, can anyone help or suggest anything I can do?

remove everything except integrated GPS. uncheck server if you have it checked.
drive to a flat field with no buildings around, select GPS data and place the device on the windscreen of your car pointed upwards for 5 minutes. do not touch it.
then select position, you should see longlit/latit.
after that your GPS will work fine.

Yeah Zurk is right in some respects JenniferP. You may just simply have to give it time to find enough satellites. I know it's annoying, and I've never had to do it before, but it may be your only option.

I live in Melbourne, Australia (which is on the South-East coast). A few times in the past weeks, my GPS keeps telling me that I am in South Australia (a completely different state) somewhere in the desert around 1000 kilometres from where I actually am!

The only way around it is to give it plenty of time to re-find 3 or more satellites so it can triangulate your position.

Thanks to both of you for your replies - very helpful to me. I live in London so maybe with all the buildings around it would be difficult.

So there is nothing that needs to be installed for the GPS to work - well that's good! I couldn't see a "server" check box to uncheck though...

Can anyone tell me what I should have in the positioning server options?

I have currently:

Positioning server use: Automatic
Access Point: o2 postpay WAP

and some server address...

Is that ok?

If I know all my settings are right then at least I know it should work given the right surroundings...

My GPS Settings:

Positioning methods: Integrated GPS - selected
Bluetooth GPS - Off
Network Based - Off
Positioning Server: Positioning Server Use - Automatic
Access Point - None (Must be defined)

These work for me, initial setup took some time but works fine after, Also didn't use GPS+

Guess it must just be my surroundings that is causing it not to connect...will just keep trying! :D

Ok - this is something I don't get...

When I access the GPS data icon - it does the "searching for GPS devices" and "calculating GPS data" for a couple of seconds...then displays "no connection" in the Navigation screen. At this point, is it still searching for a connection? If I just leave it in the Navigation screen, will it continue searching for a GPS connection...the reason I ask is there is no indication on the screen that it's still looking.

Thanks guys.

yeah, that had me slightly confused, just leave it on no connection as it is still searching and will pick up a signal sooner or later.

Ok great - I hoped this was the case!

It doesn't seem to be doing anything at that point so I didn't want to be looking at it like an idiot for ages when it had stopped searching!
