GPS help for noob?

Postby Matt » Thu Sep 04, 2008 7:04 pm

Hi folks,
I received my phone today after waiting for 7 months to upgrade to something that interested me and I'm really chuffed with it! Just trying to get my head around all the features since the most exciting phone I've had to date was a d900 which I hated with a passion.

I'm just wondering about the GPS data - hopefully someone can help. When tyring to get any data I get a "No Connection" message. So, after reading through the manual (which didn't come with the phone?) I see it says "Before you can use GPS data, you must activate a positioning method via a Bluetooth wireless connection or a wireless network connection." Is this just the case for the first time you use the GPS or is this something you need to do every time?

Sorry if the question sounds a bit dumb, I just like my stuff plug'n'play so this has thrown me.

Thanks,
Matt

P.S - is it normal to get no user manual with the phone?

Matt, I was about to post the very same thing! Getting No Connection as you say, just wondering what I need to do. I have never ever used or set up GPS, let alone GPS on a mobile.

All - any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Follow the menu's below and set the setting for Integrated GPS

Then Navigate to Applications and GPS+ then select "Download Data"

Then try again with a GPS App

Thanks for the advice Yade, much apreciated. But this hasn't made any difference as far as I can tell, I'm still getting the same "No Connevtion"message when trying to use the "GPS Data" tool.

After going to "Tools" and selecting "GPS Data" I see two messages - "Searching for GPS Devices" then "Calculating GPS Data". Once this is complete I see the GPS Data menu with Navigation, Position and Trip Distance funtions - Upon selecting any of these functions I see the "No Connection" message. Should downloading GPS+ give a connection? Should I have done something else after I downloaded it? Oh, and just to touch on the user guide saying seteup is done through the use of Bluetooth or Wifi - I'm no getting the gist. I don't bother with wifi at home so I'll give it a blast at work tomorrow.

Sorry for what may seem like dumb questions, I'm a dumb guy so I know no better :?

Cheers,
~Matt

Yade, thanks again for your help.

Matt, again I find myself exactly where you are. Still "No Connection", and now it turns out you need to pay £50 or so for Route66 UK maps. So, after resolving the No Connection issue what I will then be after are maps which I can get hold of (for free hehe) which I can easily use with my i8510. If you make any discoveries on this issue then let me know via this thread, and vice versa.

I don't ask for much hehe :D

And by the way, I didn't get the manual with the phone either!

Well best thing you can do is work in decent conditions. Make sure you are preferably outside and keep your hands way from the top of the phone while it is trying to lock as the receiver is at the top. It should take about a minute. It will acheive lock much better on a sunny/clear day/night which you are unlikely to get in UK at the moment.

I was having the same problem but had to close down route66 and load GPS+ and make sure you click download data and once its finished load route66. The first lock seemed to take about 2 mins so makesure your outside when you try it.

Ok, now that that terrible weather is not round my way anymore (hehe) I opened Route 66 and connected after about three/four minutes wait. GPS Data still says No Connection though, hmmm. I think I am going to try getting the Route 66 maps, or maybe try Nav4all, see how I get on.

Hi from another noob - received my phone yesterday and have been busy making use of the 16gb today, and have just tried the GPS out. Took about 10 seconds to display my position out in the back garden which can't be bad! I was pleased to find out that the receiver is in the top of the phone too, unlike my old N95, as it makes more sense and you're less likely to be covering it with your hand. As for the navigation software, I'm not familiar with Route 66 but had been using the Garmin Mobile XT on my N95 and found it was superb. I'm hoping to get that sorted out now on the i8510 in the next few days - if I can just find where I put the installation files on my pc!! Doh! I'm not particularly technically minded so I'm hoping it will run on the Samsung being that its also running the S60 platform?
