GPRS icon

Postby BlueMeany » Thu Oct 30, 2008 12:36 am

Does anyone else have the same "problem" as me?

Phone randomly changes and displays the broken two lines gprs connection icon under the signal strength indicator, as if you have the setting for 'Show when available' (in connection settings)... even though I have it set to 'Show when needed'

The only way I can find to stop this is to change the actual setting to 'Show when available' and then immediately change it back to 'Show when needed'

I know this is only a small bug bear, but I suspect it has an impact on the battery life if it is constantly looking for a Data signal??

I've turned off all I can think of that may be getting the phone to look for a connection - real player settings, gps settings etc etc... but whatever I do it continues to randomly do this.

Help!!

I thought I had this sussed the other day when I changed the network settings from Automatic, to my service provider (o2-uk) but alas its back again. It appears to be if/when I lose signal coverage (I'm in a rural part of country)

Yeah, I've noticed that too. Sometimes the 'connection ready' icon appears for some reason. Does anyone have any solution for that?

Also I have noticed the 'antenna icon' below the signal strength bar changes to "E" - what does that mean?

My phone is set up to work in GSM mode (not 3G), I'm in O2 network (UK).

Thanks.

I think what's going on (it's hard for me to test as I have my phone set to auto-connect to data anyway) is that when the phone looses it's signal and then re-acquires, it obviously goes through a series of handshake and capability checks with the particular network mast it's talking to. If data services are available on the cell site, I think it flashes up the icon while doing these checks. Remember it doesn't mean the phone has connected, just that it knows it can.

The E you sometimes see means EDGE (Enhanced GPRS). Only O2 and Orange make use of EDGE in the UK, as the other networks decided that 3G and HSDPA (3G+) was a better and quicker network protocol to use.

In fairness, Orange (not sure about 02) continue to provide 3G and 3G+ services that are comparable coverage wise to the other networks that haven't chosen to adopt the EDGE protocol.

Does anyone know of a way to disable Edge on the i8510?

I know on my old E250 there was a code that you put in, that disabled Edge and/or GPRS in a similar situation to what is happening on my i8510. The code doesn't appear to work for this phone though.

Its annoying now.

It is definately linked with loosing the signal/having a poor signal reception... but if I could turn off Edge I'd be happy.

Is it this icon? Some guys on this forum thinks it's the icon for HSDPA being inactive:
